Look first, then build
Morningside is a New Zealand company that coaches AI agencies. In the first half of October it sent three emails about what is working for the agencies it coaches. The material is Morningside's own and has not been checked elsewhere. Even so, it shows a pattern that keeps turning up.
The first point is about order. According to Morningside, many people start by learning to build AI agents before they have spoken to a single client. In its weekly discussion with 13 agency owners, none said they are currently selling AI development. What they sold first was an understanding of where AI actually helps a business.
The second point is that a small first step works better than a big plan. One example is a 3,000-dollar diagnostic, where the client paid for someone to look at what was broken and why. The actual build came afterwards, if at all.
Third, a demo convinces more than a proposal. When a client sees a solution working on their own work, they do not have to imagine whether it can be done.
Fourth, deals mostly come through people who already know you. According to Morningside, 38 per cent of the new deals in its programme in the third quarter came from existing relationships: past clients, colleagues and partners. Trust did not have to be built from nothing.
Fifth, it pays to look at what a company already has. Many already run Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, and those already include AI features. Often what is missing is someone to show where to use them and to train the team.
Sixth, handover is not the finished job. AI is only useful once people use it in their own working day. That is why training and following how it is used are part of the work, not an extra.
None of this is new. A good tradesperson has always looked at how the work runs before reaching for a tool. AI does not change that order. It only makes the wrong order more expensive.
If you are wondering where to start, start with one ordinary week. What was done, who it went to, and what part of it repeats the same way every time?
