What people actually buy when they buy AI work

In early October, Morningside published a report on what AI services businesses bought in September. The data comes from more than 800 AI agencies reporting on their own work. It shows the agencies' point of view rather than a sample of the whole market. Even so, it shows something that often gets lost under the marketing.

Most of the work was ordinary: finding information in documents, handling paperwork such as contracts, proposals and accounting routines, preparing for meetings and connecting systems to each other. It was not about talking robots or transforming a whole company. It was about the tasks that take an hour here and another there.

The second point is about order. Many projects started with a paid assessment, and only then was the actual solution built. First you look at how the work runs, then you decide where a machine fits.

Third, the work did not end at handover. The report lists staff training and maintenance alongside the technical builds. It also mentions a project that stalled when a developer left partway through, and another that paused when the client's funding ran out. These things are ordinary, but they are rarely said out loud.

Fourth, clients mostly came through existing relationships. Current clients bought more, contacts made referrals, and people met face to face at events. Content and direct outreach also brought clients, but trust usually came through people who were already known.

The report also covers prices. The average disclosed project price was 10,800 dollars, with a range of 3,000 to 20,000. That suggests considered purchases, not experiments.

What can you take from this? Not much with certainty, since the data belongs to one organisation. But the direction is clear. People pay for AI when it takes hold of something that already eats time, and when someone in the team can still use it after the project ends.

If you are wondering where to start, start with the task nobody wants to do but that gets done every week.
